Razor Blade Dance Floor Podcast: Episode 003

Going Back In Time

Furthering my attempt to create an active archive of older episodes, I bring (back) to you, episode # 3. My thoughts on this episode:

The strange thing about listening to these episodes again after 10 long years, is my awareness that I was far more confident in my ability to talk to strangers than I actually remember being. I still had my ‘ticks.’ I still used plenty of ‘umms’ and ‘ahhs’ while talking to the audience. I still laughed nervously and repeated generic catch phrases. But I was fearless and sure of my goal and the mission at hand. I loved the music so much, and all I wanted to do is make sure that people realized that this podcast wasn’t just a simple fanboy playing wannabe DJ in his mom’s basement. This was going to be something else, and I knew it from the get go.

The set list is sure and specific. The segues between songs had to sound smooth and purposeful without creating a feeling of disjointed juxtaposition. It had to have a definitive flow. I am amazed that I had the ability to capture that sense of cohesion between the songs so very early on. This show even had a bumper! One of about 6 or 7 that I recorded in a drunken haze, that was good enough to be used over and over again over the next decade.

When listening to this show, I was worried that I would discover that my tastes had changed or that my choices were errant in some foolish desire to pander to a larger audience during my pre-production stage. Thankfully, this was never the case and I found myself nodding in approval of most of my statements and assessments of the music being played. I am still not that crazy about that Dope Stars Inc. album.

The innocence that lurks behind my voiceprints coupled with my remarkable ability to talk slow and concisely (not an easy task for this motormouth Jersey boy) showed that I knew early on how this was going to succeed. I’d be lying to you if I made the claim that I didn’t care about such things, but it really was just as important as the musical selections.

This show has a good flow with great tracks. I still can’t pronounce the words that I mishandled during the recording of episode 3, but that is part of its charm, and a documentation of my desire to sound approachable, fallible and non-elitist. These are qualities that would diminish greatly over time, and I long to regain that sense of camaraderie and friendship that I had with my listeners during these early years.
